To Be a Man,
In This World,
At This Moment
“Where love reigns, there the will to power is absent.
Where power predominates, there love is lacking.
The one is the shadow of the other.”
– Carl Gustav Jung
Memorial Day Weekend
May 24-27, 2013
Mendocino Woodlands Camp
Mendocino, California
How do you deal with power — your own or another’s? How do you hold sorrow? What’s working you? What is your passion? What gets you up in the morning and what is yours to do in this world? What is your gift, your mission? How do you experience love in your life? We can hold all of this in community. It is essential that we learn together to hold the tension between love and power, grief and gratitude and all the dualities which inhabit us. Love, for instance, must be imbued with power to move it from sentimentality to compassion, and power must be invigorated by love to move from coercion to justice. It is of the utmost importance to our times and the world we live in that we learn to balance and hold the tension between all apparent dualities, the yin and yang of our lives.
Our TOGETHERNESS is the key. Satisfying at long last our hunger for true fellowship, community offers an antidote to the ills of the isolation and competition generally supported and promoted by the world at large. Indeed, there are wounds to our soul, sorrows too deep for solace, dilemma too subtle for advice, which can only be addressed and salved in community. There, in community, we can be seen and we can be heard, and there too we can hold space for our brothers as they find their true and real voice. To know that we are capable of coming into balance while holding life’s inevitable tensions we must rely on our collective resources. Together we can enter those formidable and unknown territories of Shadow and, rather than deny or ignore them, invite the cast-off and exiled parts of ourselves back to the Table of Understanding.
All men of good heart are invited to join us amidst Old Growth Redwoods for our annual Memorial Day Weekend men’s gathering. Over the past 23 years we have learned together how to create and maintain a community which honors our rich diversity, is safe, resilient, and supportive of our work, from in-depth explorations to exuberant celebrations. In community we sing, eat, listen to story, create sacred space, share from our hearts, experience in vibrant ritual our pain and its healing, display our wondrous talents and, in general, have an opportunity to explore together what it means to be a man, to be alive, at this moment, in this world.
Come! Bring yourself, your gifts, your passions, your agonies and struggles, your joy. Come!
